The way we work has changed dramatically. Whether you're running a business from home or managing a commercial office, your workspace needs to actually work for you. Generic office furniture might be cheap and quick, but it rarely fits the space properly or meets your specific needs.
I've designed office furniture for everyone from sole traders working in spare bedrooms to large commercial offices in Stockport. The common thread? People want furniture that's built for their space, their work, and their budget. That's where office fit-outs with bespoke joinery make all the difference.
Home Office Solutions
Working from home is now the norm for many people, but most homes weren't designed with a dedicated office in mind. Spare bedrooms, dining rooms, and even under-stairs cupboards are being pressed into service as workspaces.
The key to a good home office is making it feel separate from the rest of your living space, even if it's in the corner of your bedroom. Custom furniture design helps create that distinction.
Built-in desks are brilliant for this. We can fit them into alcoves, under windows, or along walls, creating a proper workspace that doesn't eat into your living area. Add some shelving above for books and files, and cupboards below for storage, and you've got a complete office setup that looks intentional rather than makeshift.
For home offices, I usually recommend:
- Desk Height: Standard desks are 72-75cm high, but we can adjust this for your height and whether you'll use a standing desk converter.
- Cable Management: Built-in cable channels and grommets keep wires tidy and out of sight. Nothing looks worse than cables everywhere.
- Storage: A mix of open shelving for books you use regularly and closed cupboards for paperwork and supplies you want hidden.
- Lighting: We can incorporate LED strip lighting under shelves or in alcoves for task lighting.
- Ergonomics: Proper monitor height, keyboard position, and chair clearance all matter for long-term comfort.
Commercial Office Furniture
Commercial offices have different needs. You're not just thinking about one person – you need furniture that works for multiple employees, looks professional for clients, and makes efficient use of expensive office space.
Reception desks are often the first thing clients see, so they need to make the right impression. We can design reception furniture that incorporates your branding, provides practical workspace for staff, and includes storage for paperwork and supplies. One law firm in Altrincham wanted their reception to feel welcoming but professional – we used warm oak with clean lines and integrated their logo into the desk front.
For open-plan offices, desk runs need to maximize space while giving employees enough room to work comfortably. We typically allow 120-140cm width per person, with cable management built into the desk structure. Screens between desks provide privacy without making the space feel cramped.
Meeting rooms benefit from bespoke furniture too. A boardroom table that's the right size for your room and number of attendees makes meetings more comfortable. We can incorporate power and data points into the table, add cable management, and even build in presentation screens.
Storage Solutions
Office storage is always a challenge. You need somewhere for files, stationery, equipment, and personal items, but you don't want the office to look like a storage facility.
Floor-to-ceiling storage makes the most of vertical space. The bottom cupboards can house files and equipment, middle shelves for books and reference materials, and top cupboards for archive storage. If you're worried about it feeling too imposing, we can break it up with open shelving or glass-fronted sections.
Under-desk storage is often overlooked. Mobile pedestals are fine, but built-in drawers and cupboards under desks provide more storage and look neater. For home offices, this is perfect for hiding away work stuff at the end of the day.
Materials and Finishes
Office furniture needs to be durable – it's used every day and needs to last. For desktops, we typically use either solid wood, veneered MDF, or laminate depending on budget and aesthetic.
Oak is popular for its durability and professional appearance. Walnut gives a darker, more sophisticated look. For modern offices, white or light grey laminate creates a clean, contemporary feel and is easy to keep clean.
For commercial offices, laminate often makes more sense than solid wood. It's more affordable, easier to maintain, and comes in a huge range of colours and finishes. Modern laminates can look very close to real wood, and they're much more resistant to scratches and stains.
Ergonomics Matter
If you're spending 8 hours a day at a desk, ergonomics aren't just nice to have – they're essential. Poor desk setup leads to back pain, neck strain, and reduced productivity.
Monitor height is crucial. Your screen should be at arm's length, with the top of the screen at or slightly below eye level. We can build monitor stands into desks or create shelving at the right height.
Keyboard and mouse position matters too. Your elbows should be at 90 degrees when typing, with your wrists straight. This usually means the keyboard is slightly lower than the desk surface, which is why keyboard trays can be useful.
Standing desks are increasingly popular. We can build adjustable-height desks or create spaces for standing desk converters. Some clients have both sitting and standing areas in their office.
Making It Work for You
The best office furniture is designed around how you actually work. Before we start any project, we discuss your daily routine, what equipment you use, how much storage you need, and what impression you want to create.
For home offices, we consider how the space will be used outside work hours. Can the desk double as a dressing table? Should cupboards hide the computer at the end of the day? Does it need to look like an office or blend into a bedroom?
For commercial offices, we think about workflow, client impressions, and future flexibility. Will you need to reconfigure the space as your business grows? Should furniture be modular? What's your budget per workstation?
Whether you're setting up a home office or fitting out commercial premises in Cheshire, bespoke office furniture is an investment in productivity and comfort. If you're spending significant time at a desk, it's worth getting it right.
